Bryant's Wisconsin Old-Fashioned

Old Fashioned Glass
Cubed

Ingredients

  • 0.5 oz
    Simple Syrup
  • 5 dashes
    Angostura Aromatic Bitters
  • 2 oz
    Brandy

    Wisconsin-style; a domestic/American brandy is traditional

  • 4 oz
    Soda Water

Divided: 1 oz to build, 3 oz to top. Use Sprite/7Up for 'sweet,' grapefruit soda (e.g. Squirt) for 'sour,' or seltzer (or half seltzer/half lemon-lime) for 'press'

Instructions

In a 12-ounce footed rocks glass, combine the simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and 1 ounce of soda. Swirl the mixture around the glass to integrate the ingredients and raise a light foam—the bitters should be aromatic at this point. Add the brandy, fill the glass with ice, and top with the remaining 3 ounces of soda. Garnish with a cherry and an orange half-moon.

About

A beloved Midwestern institution's take on the Old-Fashioned, built in the glass with brandy, bitters, and a splash of soda—sweet, sour, or press depending on your mood. A Milwaukee staple at Bryant's, the oldest cocktail lounge in Wisconsin.
